Great progress this week, as the crew starts installing fiber cement siding. Many of our clients prefer this material, as its relatively cost friendly and boast the "farm house" appeal.
So what is fiber cement siding? It is a siding material that is part wood pulp, part cement, part clay, and part sand, and it’s surprisingly durable and long lasting. It can mimic the appearance of wood planks or shingles while bypassing two of the biggest downfalls of traditional wood siding: termites and rot.
In addition to insect and rot proof, fiber cement boards wont warp, its fire resistant's, eco-friendly, have a long lifespan and is available in a wide range of finishes / styles.
This house in particular only has limited windows, due to privacy from the adjacent neighbors. As a design feature, we alternated the siding to make the house feel less "mass like" and add character to areas of the exterior that were "windowless" and flat.
As shown below, we used a combination of vertical board and batten strips and ship lap design. We also added a consistent horizontal band, on both the garage and house, which allows the vertical strips to be nominal in size and provides the owner multiple design options for paint schemes.
During the design process, we also generated several paint schemes for consideration. Read more here.
As expected, roofing also went underway this week. Below are some drone images of the Synthetic Underlayment being placed over the wood roof sheathing. This allows for roof flashing to be installed prior to the fiber cement board siding.
